Introduction

Dear Visitor

Thank you for visiting our Website.

We hope it is of interest to you and that we may assist you in any requirements you may have for any specialist plasterwork in the future.

(This page is also available as a Japanese Introduction if required)

Our company was established in 1887 by George Cook, one of a family of master plasterers involved with carrying out plastering to the Colleges of the University of Cambridge and local residences.

The company is now in the hands of the fourth generation of the Cook family, who are still involved with the day to day running of the company and have a close association with the workforce.

The company has seen many changes over the years with the advent of cement based plasters and more recently gypsum based plasters.

However it has never departed from the practice of using haired lime plaster and through passing its experience through the generations its current staff of craftsmen are still capable of plastering in this traditional way to a high standard.

As well as plain plastering, the company has a workshop which produces plain and decorative mouldings in plaster, glassfibre reinforced cement, glassfibre reinforced gypsum, reconstituted stone and glassfibre reinforced plastic.

We can produce these mouldings to a particular design or supply from our extensive range of stock patterns.

These mouldings can be just supplied or also fitted by a team of experienced installers.

We also employ master craftsmen who are capable of running both in situ plaster and cement mouldings.

For the traditionalist we can carry out lathing to the background using either riven oak or chestnut lathing or if cost is at a premium, sawn softwood lathing.

Over the last five years or so, we have made more and more use of hydraulic lime renders and plasters. Recently we have completed the work on converting the Old Embankment Building at Somerset House into a new museum for the Gilbert Collection. This involved some 2800m² of Italian produced hydraulic lime rendering to the existing brick walls and vaulted brick ceilings left with a Travertime finish.

On a more modern note, we carry out plain plastering using cement or gypsum based plaster, drylining including suspended ceilings and partitions, floor screeding and ceramic wall and floor tiling.

Over the years we have worked further afield, both nationally and internationally.

These projects have included such notable places as the Palace of Westminster and St. Paul’s Cathedral and we were honoured to be given the task of carrying out the lime plastering to the Dome of the Rotunda of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.

The latter is reputed at 800m² to be the largest single area of lime plaster to be carried out anywhere in the world during the last century.

Over the years we have entered projects into the prestigious Plaisterers Trophy competition. After a stringent judging process, winners are chosen in the categories of best solid or best fibrous plasterwork for the whole of the United Kingdom during the previous year.

We have been fortunate to have won one or other category on four occasions, twice for work at Downing College Cambridge, Brentwood Cathedral and a large country house at Braintree, Essex. We have also been awarded a Certificate of Merit for work carried out in the restoration of the Marble Hall for Norwich Union in Norwich, and the remodelling of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge.

In 2000, the Company were awarded the Crabb Trophy in the Plaisterers Trophy competition, for their work to a new orangery built at a large country house in Suffolk.

These projects, together with others which may be of interest to you are profiled on our Website, however should you have any queries we will be pleased to provide any further information that you may require.
