Brief description of work carried out –
This medieval moated manor house is being faithfully restored by the National Trust, section by section. George Cook and Sons were involved with the second phase of the works, the north east corner This included the chapel, drawing room, billard room, apple store and chapel stairs. The work consisted of riven chestnut lathing with haired lime plaster internally and haired lime render externally. The mixes were based on those used originally and included a proportion of fresh slurried cow dung. The lime putty used in the works was slaked on site using quicklime and stored on site for six months prior to being used in carrying out the works. Most areas were between the existing oak timbers forming the frame, which made it a very time consuming operation.
