12) Westley Church, Suffolk

Architect - Whitworth and Partners

Contractor - Watts of Millenhall

Brief description of work carried out –

This small parish Church is a excellent example of the fine exterior which can be achieved by ashlar rendering onto a plain background, running in situ hood mouldings to the openings and forming plinth details etc. The fabric of the building is unusual in being formed in handmade concrete blocks bedded in a lime mortar. The original rendering failed because it was too strong for the background and over the years it has been replaced with a weaker hydraulic lime based mix. This work has been carried out in three phases as funds have allowed. Before any re-rendering has been able to be carried out, it has been necessary to apply upto forty coats of lime water to stablise the very friable background. Work has recently been completed on the final phase of the works.
